The new Torch is brighter and better

Dubai Business News — BlackBerry's Torch 9860 is the first full-touch phone without physical keyboard from RIM.

The 3.7-inch screen is the largest RIM has ever made, it's also the highest resolution, with a handy 480x800 pixels on display. Images on the device appear crisp and well-defined, offering a thoroughly pleasing visual experience.

The Torch is powered by a new operating system (OS 7) and runs on single-core Qualcomm 1.2GHz chipset. The OS got a major overhaul with the debut of BlackBerry 6 on the Torch 9800. While BlackBerry 6 changed the homescreen and user experience, BlackBerry 7 refines it and adds new features based on the capabilities of the updated hardware platform.

At the bottom are five physical buttons — call, menu, select, escape and end. The centre button is the optical trackpad. It's quite small, but highly responsive and works very effectively for browsing the internet. It feels much easier to use than BlackBerry's superceded trackball design, and the default sensitivity is excellent. But the popping front buttons look cheap.
Typing on the virtual keyboard is where things start to stray a bit more for me. When it comes to actually communicating like BBM, SMS or e-mail, the Torch's virtual keyboard still doesn't cut it for me.

Camera
The 5MP camera and flash sit over the top of the all-metal battery door. The camera is much better with an LED flash and can record videos in 720p HD. The videos are super clear and the audio is also great. This is the sort of area where RIM's new Liquid Graphics technology is designed to shine.

The voice search function works well, but I found it to be a hit and miss. The main problem with the voice recognition search is that it isn't a web search, it only searches the phone. There's 768 MB RAM and 2.5GB of built-in storage and you can expand that with a microSD card. It comes with 4GB microSD card.

Although the Torch comes with an array of pre-loaded apps, the selection of apps on the BlackBerry platform is pretty meagre. This is made worse by the fact that many older BlackBerry apps don't yet work on OS 7.

The battery life is average for a phone of its kind. The 1230mAh battery is a bit disappointing. Half a day of e-mailing, calling, listening to music and watching videos drained the battery by 50 per cent. With normal usage, you could manage two days without a charge. The device is priced at Dh1,999.
