Al Wasl Club welcomes Maradona to the team

Dubai Business News — Legendary Argentinian coach lands in Dubai on Wednesday as he begins his bid to steer the club to glory this season. Diego Maradona was said to be brimming with new ideas for his Al Wasl charges on Wednesday night when his flight from Argentina arrived at the Majlis VIP terminal of Dubai International Airport at 11pm, ready for him to begin a hotly anticipated two-year coaching tenure with the club.

"I am more than excited to be back and I am anxious to start working with the team. I have been constantly thinking of different training methods and new strategies while I was away — even while I was on the plane, new ideas were formulating in my head and I can't wait to start implementing them on the ground," said the 50-year-old former Boca, Barcelona and Napoli frontman, who lifted the 1986 World Cup in Mexico for Argentina against West Germany to cement his iconic status.

While in South America, since officially signing for Al Wasl on May 16 and his subsequent June 4 unveiling on the Palm Jumeirah's Zabeel Saray Hotel, Maradona has kept in constant contact with his assistant in Dubai Ali Hassan asking for updates, status reports and images of the facilities in order to hit the ground running ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.

All the while Maradona has been scouting the continent for worthwhile editions.

‘El' or ‘Al Diego' as he will now, more affectionately, be referred to by fans, has already signed Uruguayan striker 29-year-old Juan Manuel Olivera from Penarol, after 25-year-old Chilean midfielder Edson Puch was signed from Universidad de Chile before Maradona joined.

Omani defender Mohammad Shaiba has been retained, while Mariano Donda, a 29-year-old Argentine midfielder for Godoy Cruz is widely speculated to be the fourth overseas import as seven-times champions Al Wasl gun for the type of league success, which was last tasted in 2007. Maradona, who had a minor car crash during the recent Copa America in Argentina, was then linked to the Argentinean managerial vacancy left by Sergio Batista in the wake of their poor quarter final penalty shoot-out defeat to eventual winners Uruguay.

He has had Al Wasl fans on the edge of their seats as to when, and indeed if, the legend would ever return to Dubai, especially given the poor health of his mother. But sighs of relief could be heard all round as officials greeted the legend off the plane and jettisoned him away no doubt to get down to the real work of forging a team built for all round glory.

Diego, who had rested well on the flight, even joked that he had a haircut before coming to Dubai in order to not waste any time while here.

No time waste Marwan Bin Bayat, who welcomed Al Wasl's new manager off the plane said: "Maradona is not only a guest of Al Wasl, but for Dubai as a whole.

"As such, we are absolutely certain that he will love his new home and can speak for the entire city when we say that we are happy to have you here."
